On Thursdays this term we have been doing gymnastics. We use equipment such as the H bar, the beam, mini tramp and the wedge. We have practiced landings, positions and rotations. Blake found backward rolls down the wedges the hatrdest. “ The cartwheels were quite easy” said Lucy. Louis was scared at first on the H bar but gave it a go and thought it was fun. Ashlee said ” I like doing the jumps off the mini tramp”

Can you do a Cartwheel?

I am wearing a sling today because it is the 40 hour famine. The 40 hr famine is where you have to give up somethingand raise money for people who dont have much food. The money will help them grow crops and feed theselves.  Unfortunately I did not raise any money but my sister Lucy raised$48.40. Imagine if you only had one arm it would be very difficult to ride a bike or swim. I think I am not going to be able to play many games or draw very well today.

IMG_0424I thought chemistry was great, although I was a bit nervous.

My favourite experiment was the acid or base experiment because it was strange that the liquid changed colour, depending on the ph.I learnt that you can deal with hot and dangerous things if you are confident.

I found that Troy was a cooperative partner because he listened when I told him to squeeze the bottle softer. I recommend we should do more chemistry in class.

Commando is an activity that we have been doing lately. We have to work as a team to complete difficult physical courses. Some people in our class have said that they enjoy it because they get to climb over fences, tunnel through sand, down mud slides and under bridges. We get good fitness results in doing it so we’re very glad!

Have you made an obstacle course before?

IMG_0366We had to hold our straws together with cardboard strips. We measured straws to find out which length we needed to have.I enjoyed building the parts for our swing. We had to fold the bits of cardboard together and we pushed the cardboard into the straws. We had to make the framewith straws, strips of cardboard and glue.

As a follow up to our monster trucks, Room 8  has made a movie. First we made a storyboard  to plan the scenes. We used a flip camera to film them. Even though some scenes are short, they took a long time to film. Different people had different roles. Some had to make props, some acted. We  all edited our own version using  Windows Movie Maker , here is mine.

let me know what you think.

Lily

Can you please send us some feedback how can we improve our movies.

Technology in Rm 8 has been making Monster trucks. We used couflute, skewers, straws, aluminium cans and flywire”bolts”. We drew our plans in our books then traced them. These trucks were challenging to make. We used no glue in our construction.

Have you made been challenged to make something lately?

Today a monster truck visited our school. It was called Scooby Doo. Did you know that they use methanol instead of petrol?Methanol is invisible when it burns so it is dangerous for the driver. The drivers have to wear special  fire  proof suits and helmets. Monster trucks are very expensive . One tyre costs $9000 and to buy a monster truck it costs $300.000. That’s without it’s shell!  When they have got  the tyres they  shave off the tread to make it lighter. The trucks have evolved from crushing cars  to doing  jumps.

Have you ever seen a monster truck in action?

IMG_0206[1]Stone fruit is now in season. In Room 8 we brought some apricots, nectarines and peaches some of which was growing in our backyards. We made a dipping solution of water, sugar and sodium metabisulphate. We cut the fruit in half, removed the stone then left the fruit in the solution overnight. We placed the fruit on wooden trays and left the trays in the sun. The ants certainly liked the sweet sticky solution. Now we leave the fruit for several days to dry.

Do you like eating dried fruit?
